be related to vertical human parvovirus B19, an infection with atypical clinical manifestation. “Aims: A retrospective analysis was carried out of 291 cases of oesophageal cancer treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT) at a single UK cancer centre between 1995 and 2009. Results: Data on 266 patients were available for analysis. Ninety-three per cent of patients completed treatment according to protocol. Grade 3 and 4 toxicities were seen in 42 and 7%, respectively. Median survival was 20.6 months; 2, 3 and 5 year survival rates were 43.6, 32.9 and 19.5%, respectively. Advanced disease was associated with a worse outcome. Shorter disease length was associated with a better median survival, but some patients with disease >10 cm had long-term disease control. The effect of other patient- and disease-related factors was also analysed.

Conclusion:

We present data showing that dCRT is well tolerated and should be considered as an alternative to surgery for all patients with locally advanced oesophageal cancer, not only those with co-morbidity. “Purpose: To describe a successful clinical case of immediate prosthetic loading of modified sandblasting and acid-etching surface ITI dental implants inserted in

a grafted maxilla after AZ 628 Le Fort I osteotomy.

Materials and Methods: A 59-year-old man with a severely atrophied maxilla was treated with Le Fort I osteotomy and interpositional iliac bone graft. Thirteen weeks later, 7 modified sandblasted and acid-etched surface ITI dental implants were inserted with immediate application of a screw-fixed prosthetic acrylic device kept in functional loading for 3 months until a definitive fixed prosthesis was inserted.

Results: After 20-month follow-Lip there has been no implant failure, with minimal bone loss and healthy peri-implant soft tissues; the patient is functionally and esthetically satisfied.

“Background: This study applied item response theory (IRT) and latent class analysis (LCA) procedures to examine the dimensionality and heterogeneity

of comorbid substance use disorders (SUDs) and explored their utility for standard clinical assessments, including the Addiction Severity Index (ASI), HIV Risk Behavior Scale (HRBS), and SF-36 quality-of-life measures.

Methods: The sample included 343 opioid-dependent patients enrolled in two national multisite studies of the U.S. National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network (CTN001-002). Patients were recruited from inpatient and outpatient addiction treatment settings at 12 programs. Data were analyzed by factor analysis, IRT, LCA, and latent regression procedures.

Results: A two-class LCA model fit dichotomous SUD data empirically better than one-parameter and two-parameter IRT models.

In this study under directly observed therapy (DOT) programme, 38 patients including adults and children of both sexs who admitted suffering with either pulmonary or extra pulmonary TB, were selected. The majority of the patients were from rural areas (64%) and the rest of patients from urban cities. The selected patients included both of initial phase (39 To) and continuation phase (61%) and were receiving once daily dosing of rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol combination (RHZE), and ethambutol and isoniazid (EH), respectively. Two patients (5%) were of category 2 (relapsed patients) while thirty six patients (95%) were of category 1 (new cases). Family history, medication errors, and prescribing trends were observed and compared the treatment plan with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pakistan Chest Society (PCS) guidelines. It was observed that WHO and PCS guidelines were followed in the hospitals and all the prescription trend was found rationale with no drug-drug interaction but yet the treatment period was more than 6 months due to poor patient compliance to the anti tuberculosis medication and ineffective DOT program in Pakistan.”

Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Forty two liver transplant candidates (LTC) (study group) and 42 control

subjects. Digital panoramic radiographs where used. Periapical status was scored according to the periapical index (PAI). Results were analysed statistically using the Chi-squared test and logistic regression.

Results: Radiographic signs of AP in one or more teeth was found

in 79% of patients in the study group and in 50% of control subjects (p = 0.008; OR = 3.7; C. I. 95% = 1.4 – 9.5). One or more root-filled teeth (RFT) were found in 19% and 62% of study and control subjects, respectively (p = 0.0001; OR = 0.14; 95% C. I. = 0.05 – 0.38). Among LTC patients 14.7% of the teeth had AP, whereas in the control subjects 4.2% of teeth were affected (p = 0.0002). “This study verified the effectiveness and the potential

toxic impact of PERACLEAN (R) Ocean ballast water treatment for very cold freshwater (0.1-0.5 degrees C) in real ballast tank (750 M) conditions aboard a ship and in large-volume (4.5 m(3)) polyethylene tanks. Concentrations of peracetic acid (PAA) and hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) gradually dropped by 41-59% over 5 days. The treatment altered the quality of the treated waters by causing a pH drop of 0.9-1.3 units and a fourfold to sevenfold increase in dissolved organic carbon and organophosphates concentrations. More than 90% of the biomass of free-floating micro-organisms and viable phytoplankton were eliminated within 48 h after treatment. The treatment resulted in 100% mortality in caged fish exposed to treated waters but was totally ineffective against adult zebra mussels and some nematods living in tank sediments. Toxic response from ecotoxicological assays indicated that treated waters after 5 days should be diluted by a factor of 1:2 to 1:200 to reduce toxicity below selected endpoints of acute lethality tests. On the basis of PAA degradation rate, fresh waters treated with 100-ppm PERACLEAN (R) Ocean should be kept in ballast tanks for 15-20 days after treatment to reduce toxicity.
