“Study Design. Case report.

Objective.

Two cases are presented in which the use of recombinant bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rh-BMP-2) in a posterior cervical decompression and instrumented arthrodesis may have contributed to seroma formation and cord compression.

Summary of Background Data. The use of rh-BMP-2 has been proven effective in promoting bone formation in anterior lumbar spine NVP-HSP990 concentration arthrodesis. Whether rh-BMP-2 is safe and/or effective in the cervical spine has not been determined. Adverse effects when it is used for anterior cervical fusion procedures have been reported but its role in posterior cervical decompression and instrumented fusions has yet to be determined.

Methods. We report on two cases. The first is a 68-year-old man presenting with a substantial decline in his neurologic status approximately 2 weeks after surgery. The second is a 44-year-old man presenting with a substantial decline in his neurologic status approximately 5 days after surgery. Both complications occurred after a posterior cervical laminectomy and instrumented arthrodesis when rh-BMP-2 was used as a bone graft substitute.

Results. Both patients were found to have a moderate-to-large seroma causing severe compression on the spinal cord and were urgently taken to an operating room for evacuation of the seromas. Both showed improvement of their neurologic status immediately after surgery.

calcium, parathyroid hormone, alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (gamma GT), aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase and plasma bicarbonate were performed monthly. Seven patients underwent a bone biopsy for evaluation of lanthanum bone content.

Results: Switching to lanthanum carbonate led to a reduction in mean serum phosphate levels (-18.2%; p<0.001) and calcium x phosphorus product CX-4945 (-17.6%; p<0.0001). There were no important changes in other variables, except for an increase in transaminases in 2 patients with preexisting liver disease, who discontinued therapy. An increase in plasma bicarbonate concentration was observed (p=0.001). Although some

“Background: We hypothesized that post-operative serum uric acid (SUA) may be associated with acute kidney injury (AKI).

Methods: In this prospective, observational study, the relationships between SUA, urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (uNGAL) and interleukin-18 (uIL-18), serum monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (sMCP-1) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (sTNF-alpha), and incidence of AKI were determined. SUA were divided into tertiles and their association with AKI investigated.

Results: A total of 100 cardiac surgery patients were included for analyses. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd SUA tertiles were associated with 15.1%, 11.7%, and 54.5% incidence of AKI, respectively. Simultaneous treatment with ENO significantly lowered the increase in body weight gain, lipid and lipoprotein levels, with a concomitant increase in HDL in the plasma and heart when compared to HFD-fed rats. sugar glucose. It was found that oxygen deficiency interferes with the repression of Amy3D gene expression imposed by low concentrations of glucose but not with that imposed by higher amounts. This differential anoxic de-repression depending on sugar concentration suggests the presence of two distinct pathways for sugar regulation of Amy3D gene expression. Anoxic de-repression can be mimicked by treating rice embryos with inhibitors of ATP synthesis during respiration. Other sugar-regulated rice alpha-amylase genes, Amy3B/C and 3E, behave similarly to Amy3D. Treatment with a respiratory inhibitor or anoxia also relieved the sugar repression of the rice CIPK15 gene, a main upstream positive regulator of SnRK1A that is critical for Amy3D expression in response to sugar starvation.
